Doug and Judy Cook, Innkeepers For Hire
We are currently looking for a temporary (2 weeks to 4 months) position managing a small to medium size Inn in a beautiful and unique location, where we can enjoy a new environment/new life for ourselves and further develop our “interim innkeeper” company to assist in meeting your needs. We will help the owners realize business growth and income improvement (over similar seasonal periods) during our stay.
Depending on the owner’s situation (much needed vacation, illness issues, family emergencies, etc.) and desires, we can “hold down the fort” for a short period or take on all inn management responsibilities (from managing guests, to providing business development skills, all aspects of day-to-day inn management, and long-term planning for continued success) for longer assignments.
After nearly 40 year careers in Civil and Environmental Engineering/Land Use Planning (Doug) and Environmental Compliance/Office Administration/Personnel Management/Retail Sales (Judy), along with raising 4 boys through completion of their college educations, Doug and Judy needed a change of pace.
They chose the field of hospitality management and created Four Brothers Inns, LLC in early 2004 and purchased the Brannan Cottage Inn, an historic (circa 1860) six room bed & breakfast inn in Calistoga, CA (at the top of the iconic Napa Valley). They immediately increased occupancy and income (on an annual basis) over the prior owner’s success by approximately 15% and 20% respectively in their first two years, by emphasizing the customer, providing many additional services (wine tastings, concierge services, pet-friendly services, etc.) and embarking on a program of continuous improvement both in service and facility upgrades.
After a wonderful 9+ years of inn ownership and associated business growth, they sold their inn and determined their primary interests were in visitor management and concierge services and took on a salaried position as Innkeepers at the Chelsea Garden Inn, a 5-room B&B also in the unique little (5,000+residents) city of Calistoga. Since 2013, we’ve gradually added further property management services for CGI and our owner’s other properties in town—vacation cottages, vacation homes, townhouses, etc.
While Judy was doing all the hard work, Doug found time to get involved in the California Association of Bed and Breakfast Inns (CABBI; recently renamed as California Association of Boutique and Breakfast Inns). He initially served on the InnSpire Convention Committee, was appointed to the CABBI Council in 2009 and is serving his sixth year on the Council (essentially the Board of Directors of the Association).
And now, after 12 years in Calistoga, we’ve decided we again need a change of pace/location. We are hitting the road in our new RV and searching for new interim innkeeping assignments as we travel around the great big beautiful US of A.
Aloha in the Hawaiian language means affection, peace, compassion, and mercy. Since the middle of the 19th century, it also has come to be used as an English greeting to say goodbye and hello.
